Monday 5/5- A new week, same old me! I started with a kettlebell strength training at my gym and it kicked my butt. It’s Cinco de Mayo today and I just happened to be craving a tamale, so I stopped by Tia Yanet, the tamale stand on Court Street & President Street. Folks, these are the best tamales that I have ever had, ever. They are so flavorful and moist and packed with delicious fillings. Go get one immediately! I happened to score some shisho at the market the day before, and my favorite thing is to make mini shisho tacos that i fill with pieces of tamale, some cilantro, scallion, sour cream and hot sauce. YUM! I got a foot massage, I worked on writing stuff, I cleaned, I read. Then I had some rice with spinach and cherry tomatoes for dinner and watched a few episodes of The Larry Sanders Show while obsessively looking at photos from the Met Gala.
Tuesday 5/6- I have a few catering things later in the week so I started making some stuff for that. I roasted a few chickens and nibbled at that while I was shredding it. I made meatballs, marinara sauce, tomato butter, roasted cherry tomatoes, roasted leeks and made chicken stock from the bones of the roasted chickens. Dragged myself to Pilates and ran on the treadmill while watching KIDS because, as you all know by now, I am trying to win an award for watching the most inapropriate movies possible on the treadmill. I met my lovely and amazing friend (who is also my hairdresser and let me tell you he is a genius, lmk if you want his info!) Preston for dinner at Inga’s in Brooklyn Heights. It was absolutely amazing. SO delicious! We had morel toast, which reminded me of the one they would make at Marlow, which makes sense as Sean the chef/owner at Inga’s used to be the chef at Marlow/Diner. We also had a perfectly dressed simple salad, skate Meuniere and a wonderful pasta primavera. Such a nice meal!
Wednesday 5/7- The cook-a-thon continued today, and I made some pickled veggies, homemade Oreo crumbs and a few dressings. I did hot yoga with my favorite teacher, Paulo and finished KIDS on the treadmill because I am a whacko and I’m wondering if it’s this kind of behavior that is the reason why I am still single. I plugged away on my blank from hell essay and ate a big Greek Salad for dinner with some delicious roast chicken in it. I also threw in lots of dill, shisho and cilantro which really kicked it up. notch. Emeril would have been proud.
Thursday 5/8- Started this day as I start most days these days, with a delicous coffee at Octavia. I need to start doing more coffee at home though or I will go broke. I shopped for my events and made a ton of lasagna, salsa verde, Caesar dressing, marsala sauce and chocolate budino. I went to Pilates and stayed away from the treadmill, although I considered hopping on a cueing up Cannibal Holocaust. I came home and finished my essay, and to celebrate I ordered sushi from Hibino. This place is just the best. I got eel cucumber, tuna avocado, a piece of scallop sushi and a piece of salmon sushi, and watched She’s The One as I feasted!
Friday 5/9- I woke up and made a raspberry ruffled milk pie and frittata with leeks, cheddar and roasted cherry tomatoes. I dipped to my hot yoga class, then wizzed back home to deliver a big order to a client in Brooklyn Heights. I met a new friend for dinner at Frankie’s, and we had a really nice time:) My old friend Nicky was working, and it was a delight to get to chat to him a bit. If you’ve ever been to Frankie’s, chances are you know who Nicky is. He’s the tall, charming guy who looks like a young Jimmy Stewart, and one of my favorite people on earth! They sent us over some pickled peppers with anchovies and olives which were a perfect way to start. We had a kale and a chickpea crostini, fennel salad, eggplant marinara and the cavatelli— the hits. We also had a tiramisu which I was skeptical of at first because I think their desserts are pretty blah, but this was actually very good! Such a fun night……
Saturday 5/10- Big party tonight! Snuck in a hot yoga class and then rushed around getting everything together. Met my amazing crew, AD, Guy and Herman at the clients house, just down the street from me in Carroll Gardens. It was a wonderful party, and we had a blast as per usual. We made grilled asparagus with salsa verde and burrata, Caesar salad, the Brucie tag with tomato butter, Brussels sprouts, scallions and cold ricotta, meatballs with red sauce, broccoli rabe and chocolate budino for dessert. We went out to have a drink at Henry Public after and chatted with my friend Christian who was behind the bar. Christian is one of the all time great guys, and seeing him is such a treat! What a perfect day!
Sunday 5/11- Mother’s Day! This can be a really complicated day for people. My mother and I have an amazing relationship, but it hasn’t always been that way, so I can relate to how hard it can be for folks. I felt lucky to be able to celebrate with my adorable mom, who I could not love any more if I tried. I bought her a blueberry bush and an assortment of veggies from Lani’s farm. I met her and my stepdad, Rob, at Robert Moses beach and we had the most perfect afternoon. The weather was amazing, and Bobbie made fat sandwiched packed with roasted veggies, grilled chicken and fresh mozz from Mr Sausage. In the evening I met my good friend Thomas at Saint Julivert for dinner. I always forget that La Vara is a place, and it’s a shame because it is incredible, and so is its sister restaurant, Saint Julivert. They are definitely restaurants for rich adults who own brownstones, which neither Tom nor I are, but we managed to not totally embarrass ourselves and we had a really great meal. WOW, I was honestly blown away by how good the food was. We had very good brown anchovies served with a variety of little toppings, Jimmy Nardillo’s on toast, scallop shisho tacos (!), raw shrimp w/ kumquat, a radicchio salad with blue cheese, walnuts and coffee vinaigrette, and a zabaglione with strawberries. After dinner we went to hang in the back yard of some of Thomas’ friends and they greeted us with FRESH BAKED CHOCOLATE CHIP COOKIES!!!! Could this day get any better?!?! These people were so nice, and we had lots of laughs and I walked home in the warm night air feeling super lucky.
Love you guys! LMK what you are eating and watching and loving right now.
XOXOXO,
Z
