I had the urge recently to become a Gene Hackman completist, and so I have been on a deep dive into his filmography for the past several months now. I’ve spent many a night re-watching my favorites, and discovering films that I have missed, and so it felt almost personal when I heard about his passing. We throw around the phrase, “there was no one quite like him” a lot, and maybe we are all truly snowflakes in our own right. Or maybe there was actually just no one quite like Gene-fucking-Hackman, and there never ever will be ever again. He didn’t invent the anti hero, but he perfected the archetype with his silky smooth charisma, and genius level comic timing. There seemed something aching somewhere within the man, and he used it to create deeply compelling and mysterious characters, that were both relatable and larger than life.
